Causes of a Yeast Infection

It is highly beneficial for a lot of people to fully understand the causes of a yeast infection particularly women who are always at risk for vaginal yeast infection or Candidiasis. People often have misconceptions about yeast infections believing that women are the only ones affected.

While it is true that vaginal yeast infection is the most common type of yeast infection, this condition can also affect men (yeast infection of the penis foreskin) and there are other areas of the body which are prone to this as well (armpits, nostrils, oral cavity, areas covered by a diaper and ears). Moreover, Candida Albicans is the most common type of micro-organism that causes yeast infection. However, other micro-organisms can also cause fungal infection.

Many factors serve as causes of a yeast infection. Among women, vaginal yeast infection may be caused by wearing underwear that tends to trap heat and moisture in the vaginal area such as nylon underwear and swimsuit bikinis. Wearing thong underwear or a G-string bikini can also cause a yeast infection because it makes it easier for the bacteria found in the anal area to cross through to the vaginal area.

Thong underwear has also been found to be unhygienic. Other causes of a yeast infection include wearing tight fitting jeans and shorts that can also trap heat and moisture in the vaginal area as well as exercising or jogging under hot weather conditions. Humid weather increases the likelihood of getting sweaty all over the body which triggers yeast infection in some prone areas.

Taking certain medications such as antibiotics and birth control pills can also cause a yeast infection. Antibiotics are known to kill the bad bacteria in the body as well as the good ones that help maintain the body’s natural balance. When this natural balance is affected or disturbed, abnormal overgrowth of certain micro-organisms can occur, example is the micro-organism Candida Albicans, which can then lead to yeast infection.

The same effect can happen with the intake of birth control pills. These pills can likewise disturb the natural balance of the vaginal area and lead to abnormal overgrowth of the naturally-occurring micro-organism, Candida, which then leads to Candidiasis.

Stress, constant fatigue (physically and mentally), lack of sleep and poor diet are also common causes of a yeast infection. Individuals who are constantly exposed to stressful conditions and those who have insufficient hours of sleep and lack quality rest are highly predisposed to yeast infection.

Individuals who drink too much alcohol, have too much sugar in their diet and who suffer from nutritional deficiency are also at high risk for this type of infection. Finally, those who have HIV infection and diabetes are also found to be more prone to yeast infections.

Understanding the causes of a yeast infection can lead to increased awareness so that people can work on its prevention.
